About The Role
We are seeking a talented Software Engineer specializing in Security Observability to join our dynamic Security team. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for designing and developing secure, scalable systems that enhance our security observability infrastructure. Your expertise in software engineering will be instrumental in building robust data pipelines, maintaining security-relevant data, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to improve detection and response capabilities. This position offers flexibility to work remotely or relocate to one of our offices in San Francisco, Seattle, or New York City, with relocation assistance available.
As a Software Engineer in this role, you will focus on creating scalable software solutions that centralize security data from diverse sources, improve system resilience, and support forensic investigations and compliance efforts. Your work will directly impact OpenAI’s ability to monitor, detect, and respond to security threats effectively, ensuring the safety of our technology, people, and products.
This role requires a proactive mindset, strong technical skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with various teams to understand evolving security data needs and implement scalable, reliable solutions. Qualifications
- Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Golang, or similar.
- Experience with infrastructure as code tools like Terraform.
- Hands-on experience working with cloud platforms such as Azure.
- Strong background in building and maintaining data pipelines, especially for security-related data.
- Knowledge of security monitoring, observability, and forensic data analysis.
- Generalist engineering mindset with the ability to pivot across domains like databases, SRE, or security.
- Effective collaboration skills with security and engineering teams.

- Experience with scalable system design and data resilience strategies.
- Design and develop scalable, secure software systems to facilitate security observability across OpenAI’s infrastructure.
- Build and maintain data pipelines that centralize and store security-relevant information from multiple sources.
- Improve the resilience, reliability, and high availability of data systems supporting security operations.
- Collaborate with Detection & Response (D&R) and other security teams to identify and reduce security risks.
- Support forensic investigations and compliance efforts through data engineering and analysis.
- Continuously evaluate and enhance existing security data infrastructure to adapt to emerging threats.
- Participate in code reviews, testing, and documentation to ensure high-quality deliverables.
