Ren is pioneering a new approach to building intelligent computing systems, based on an entirely new framework for Machine Learning called the Universal State Machine (USM). Our goal is to leverage the USM to develop frontier-grade AI systems (like Open AI’s
ChatGPT or Google’s Gemini) at a tiny fraction of the cost.
The USM does not use the same computing primitives as Deep Learning, and needs a new Kernel for executing its algorithms. We are building a small team of excellent Software Engineers to design and engineer the USM Kernel.
You will be working in-person closely with the founding team in Port City, Colombo.
Role Overview
This role is a unique opportunity to apply your front-end skills today while being mentored by senior engineers building tomorrow's core AI infrastructure. We are seeking a highly motivated Software Engineer Intern with a passion for robust front-end development and a keen eye for user interface design.
You will work closely with the USM Kernel Engineering team to design and build a front-end for core Kernel operations and workflows. This role will involve Systems Programming work to integrate with the USM Kernel, as well as UI/UX components as you design and build a user-friendly application to expose the underlying data and controls.
This role prioritizes strong engineering fundamentals. While you will play a crucial role in translating design goals into responsive, high-quality, and accessible user experiences, we are looking for a candidate with deep problem-solving skills and high potential for expansion of their other technical capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Engineering First: Work closely with senior engineers to implement, test, and maintain high-performance front-end code for our internal tools.
- Design Translation: Collaborate with the engineering team to convert detailed UI/UX designs and prototypes into functional, cross-browser compatible web pages using modern front-end technologies.
- Quality & Standards: Ensure all code adheres to engineering best practices, accessibility standards, and maintains a high level of design fidelity.
- Collaboration & Growth: Participate in team brainstorming sessions and contribute to architectural discussions. You will be expected to engage in continuous learning and adapt to new technologies and challenges.
Required Skills and Qualities
- Currently pursuing or recently completed a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Solid understanding of computer science principles, data structures, and algorithms.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities; you are curious, technically scrappy, and thrive in open-ended challenges.
- Strong familiarity with front-end development fundamentals, visual design principles, and responsive design.
- Incredibly high attention to detail and a strong drive for great craftsmanship.
Preferred Skills and Qualities
- Experience with a modern design tool.
- Prior experience working with Rust UI Libraries like Tauri, Dioxus, and Leptos.
- Comfortable operating in a Linux command line environment.
- Exposure to or interest in systems programming languages (e.g., Rust, C++, or C).
