Job Description

Overview and objectives of the position:

The technical support engineer supports ECU SL’s teaching and research by overseeing the effective running of the laboratories, performing a variety of tasks to ensure that equipment and materials are appropriately set-up in laboratories and other classes. The technical support engineer may perform other tasks that lie outside of their daily role in order to support campus operations.

Key result Area

    • Co-ordinates the preparation, organisation and distribution of equipment and materials to laboratories and other classes. Sets up, pre-runs, services and dismantles experiments.
    • Maintains accurate records of individual laboratory requirements for each unit and assists academic staff with experimental designs and equipment to enable laboratories and other classes to be performed efficiently and effectively.
    • Ensures teaching and research opportunities are maximized and resources are appropriately handled to avoid damage and Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) incidents, e.g. by:
      • Advising and assisting with the demonstration of equipment and procedures for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
      • Lead the risk assessment for the activities to be carried out related to teaching and research
      • Lead the process of approving new equipment design, manufacture and modification
    • Maximizes teaching, learning and research opportunities and optimizes use of valuable resources by:
      • Ensuring manuals for the equipment are current, ensuring safety, security and availability of all equipment and laboratories;
      • Maintaining assets register;
      • Co-ordinating the loan of equipment;
      • Ensuring consumables are ordered and stock supplies maintained at an appropriate level.
    • Develops and maintain productive relationships with relevant engineering organizations and suppliers. Attend further training to develop skills and keep abreast of technological advances. Establish effective service agreements through cost analysis comparisons.
    • Maintains compliance with relevant legislation and University policies and procedures, including equity and health & safety and exhibit good practice in relation to same.
    • Assists in planning, preparation and support of special purpose events including workshops, assessment activities, commercial activities, community engagement activities, Open Day and professional development workshops.
    • Employees are required to participate in all ECU, team, and individual planning activities; comply with ECU SL policies and practices in all aspects of their work and conduct and ensure the safety and wellbeing of themselves and others by complying with relevant requirements.
    • Carries out other related duties as requested by the Convenor of Engineering and the Dean of Academic Programs.

Qualifications

Essential:

    • Qualifications: A Bachelor level qualification and expertise gained from a combination of experience, training or professional accreditation. Ideally from an Electrical or Mechatronics background
    • Experience: Relevant experience in providing laboratory technical support, ideally in a technical environment.
    • Customer Focus: Focusing on all aspects of customer service to achieve quality outcomes for all parties including internal and external customers at all levels. Involves identifying customers' needs and values, managing customer relationships, marketing services to customers and continually evaluating and improving customer service.
    • Workplace efficiency and effectiveness: Knowledge of resources available across the system internally and externally. Working in a coordinated and integrated way recognizing the key interdependencies for success.
    • Presenting and Communicating Information: Ability to organize and present information, views and concepts in a concise, understandable and interesting format for a variety of audiences, from ECU’s internal and external communities. Involvements determining the most appropriate format and vehicle for delivering information to ensure the audience’s understanding of the message and its intent.
    • Problem Solving and Decision Making: Ability to investigate, identify and analyse key issues and the associated alternative, benefits and costs to develop practical solutions. Involves being creative and innovative when developing effective solutions and the ability to manage related risks. Also, an understanding of when a decision needs to be escalated to others and working to try to identify and address potential problems before they arise.
    • Special requirements: Due to the nature of the role, some weekend and evening work is required throughout the year and therefore flexibility is required.
