MTSI is seeking a Data Engineering Intern to work remotely in support of our data, analytics, and modernization efforts.
This role is well‑suited for students who have completed foundational coursework in programming, databases, and analytics and want hands‑on experience with data pipelines, enterprise data models, and documentation that supports scalable data operations.
Responsibilities
- Assist with data collection, cleansing, and transformation for structured and semi‑structured data.
- Use Python to perform data manipulation and exploratory analysis.
- Support basic data pipeline development and testing, including simple ETL/ELT tasks and verifying data flows between systems under team guidance.
- Develop data visualizations in Power BI or Tableau to communicate insights to stakeholders.
- Contribute to enterprise architecture artifacts, such as documenting source‑to‑target mappings, data dictionaries, and data lineage.
- Participate in version control workflows (commits, branching, pull requests) using Git‑based tools.
- Draft and maintain documentation of data sources, pipeline steps, and visualization methodologies to support continuity and knowledge sharing.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support ongoing data engineering and analytics initiatives.
- Currently pursuing a degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related discipline.
- Academic exposure to Python, SQL, and introductory ETL or data modeling concepts.
- Familiarity with Power BI, Tableau, or similar visualization tools.
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
These skills are not required, but are commonly seen across internal projects and will help you be successful:
Cloud & Data Platforms
- Exposure to Microsoft Azure, including concepts such as data storage, compute, networking basics, managed identities, or Azure‑based ETL tooling (e.g., Azure Data Factory).
- Familiarity with cloud architectures or diagramming tools used for modeling enterprise systems.
- Experience using Git, GitLab, or GitHub for version control, including branching, merge requests, and basic CI/CD concepts. Supported internally via Azure‑hosted GitLab environments.
- Basic understanding of ETL pipelines and data lineage.
- Familiarity with SQL optimization concepts or NoSQL systems.
- Experience working with JSON, XML, or APIs.
- Ability to obtain/maintain a U.S. government security clearance.
- U.S. Citizenship is required.
