Job Description
As a Software Engineering Intern at Pearson, you will gain valuable hands-on experience working on large-scale software development projects that power modern learning platforms and products. During the internship, you will actively participate in requirements analysis, software design, and application development, building practical skills across the full software development lifecycle.
You will work within a collaborative Agile–Scrum environment, contributing alongside experienced engineering teams while learning industry best practices in teamwork, delivery, and continuous improvement. The role also provides a unique opportunity to learn from technology experts, with exposure to cutting-edge software engineering practices, modern development tools, and emerging AI-driven technologies.
In addition, interns will engage with software research and development initiatives, strengthening both their technical capabilities and professional communication skills within the context of educational technology and digital assessment solutions.
What does the 6 months involve?
During the 6-month program taking place between June and December 2026, with some flexibility in scheduling. Interns will gain hands-on experience in large-scale software Development, working closely with Pearson Software Engineer teams and experts. Key activities include requirements analysis, software design, and application development. Interns will also have opportunities to enhance their collaboration and communication skills in by working with project stakeholders both on site and with distributed teams located offshore.
This position is hybrid, with minimum 3 days (per week) travel to Pearson Lanka office.
Minimum Requirements
Currently reading for Bachelor’s degree in Computing, Information Technology, Mathematics, Physics or equivalent.
The desire to learn and continuously improve on the product quality, performance and other non-functional requirements.
Effective interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to interact with prompt and professionalism to the teams across multiple geographies and time zones.
Strong technical skills and knowledge in Java and related tools & technologies including open source front-end & server-side technologies.
Knowledge on RDBMS technologies and understanding of NoSQL and Big Data architecture.
Experience and knowledge on OOP, Analysis & Design, Architectural & Design Patterns, Unit Testing and development of highly scalable web applications.
Understanding of Agile software development practices such as SCRUM & TDD / ATDD.
