The Role
We’re hiring a Senior WordPress Developer with at least 5 years of professional coding experience to own end-to-end WordPress delivery—from architecture and theme/plugin development to performance, security, and CI/CD. You’ll collaborate across design, content, SEO, analytics, and compliance to build sites that are fast, accessible, and easy for editors.
What You’ll Do (Key Responsibilities)
- Architecture & Build
- Develop custom themes (child themes or block/FSE) and Gutenberg blocks using theme.json, React, and PHP.
- Build and maintain custom plugins, CPTs, taxonomies, and ACF/field groups.
- Implement headless/hybrid integrations when needed (WP REST API / WPGraphQL).
- Quality, Performance & Security
- Hit Core Web Vitals targets (LCP, CLS, INP/TBT); implement image/CDN strategy (WebP/AVIF, lazy load).
- Configure caching layers (page cache, object cache/Redis), preload, critical CSS, code splitting.
- Harden WordPress: role/permission policy, 2FA, security headers, WAF/CDN rules, dependable backup/restore.
- Editorial Experience
- Create reusable patterns/template parts and documentation that let non-technical editors move fast.
- Implement forms and workflows (Gravity/Fluent/Ninja) with spam protection and CRM routing.
- Integrations & Data
- Connect to CRM/MA tools (e.g., HubSpot/Salesforce/Marketo), webhooks, and third-party APIs.
- Ensure analytics/consent setup (GTM/GA4) with event tracking that survives releases.
- SEO & Accessibility
- Ship technical SEO foundations (sitemaps, robots, canonicals, schema) and WCAG 2.2 AA accessibility.
- Plan and execute redirect maps and content migrations with zero critical 4xx on go-live.
- Delivery & DevEx
- Own Git workflow, code reviews, and CI/CD (e.g., GitHub Actions) across dev/stage/prod.
- Maintain environments (Docker/Lando/Local), secrets, logs, and observability.
- Write runbooks and handover docs; mentor junior developers.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years professional software development (significant time in WordPress/PHP 7.4/8+).
- Strong PHP, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML5, CSS3/SCSS, and React (for Gutenberg).
- Proven experience with:
- Custom themes/plugins, Gutenberg block development, theme.json, FSE.
- ACF, CPTs, custom taxonomies, WP-CLI, Composer.
- Performance tuning (Core Web Vitals), caching (server/object), and CDN setups.
- Security best practices, authentication/authorization, secure forms, SMTP deliverability.
- Git branching, pull requests, code review; CI/CD to staging/production.
- Familiar with GA4/GTM, structured data (Schema.org), on-page SEO practices.
- Comfortable reading API docs and building REST/GraphQL integrations.
- Solid understanding of accessibility standards (WCAG 2.2 AA).
Nice to Have
- Headless experience (Next.js/Nuxt + WPGraphQL).
- WooCommerce (checkout performance, transactional emails, tax/shipping).
- Redis, Nginx/Apache tuning; Linux basics; Cloudflare or similar CDNs.
- Testing: PHPUnit, Playwright/Cypress for E2E, visual regression.
- Experience in regulated or enterprise environments (governance, change control).
