Background


SLYCAN Trust is a non-profit think tank working on climate change, sustainable development, biodiversity and ecosystem conservation, and social justice including gender and youth empowerment. We are active on the global, regional, national, and local level with a particular focus on the countries of the Global South.

Overview


The Programme and Communication Intern will support SLYCAN Trust’s communication and outreach activities, assisting in content creation, social media management, event coordination, and stakeholder engagement. The intern will also contribute to programme activities, research and knowledge dissemination with a special focus on communication and outreach.


Tasks


The intern will:


  • Assist in creating, editing and scheduling engaging content for SLYCAN Trust’s social media platforms, including text, images, and videos.
  • Monitor and analyse social media performance and suggest improvements to enhance outreach.
  • Support the development of outreach materials such as newsletters, reports, and promotional materials.
  • Support to manage the organization’s website, ensuring content updates and backend maintenance.
  • Assist in responding to messages, comments, and queries on social media and other communication channels.
  • Provide support in organizing webinars, consultations, and other events, including logistical arrangements and participant coordination.
  • Assist in research and content development for policy briefs, reports, and knowledge products.
  • Contribute to stakeholder engagement efforts, including communication with partners and beneficiaries.
  • Assist in the creation of visual materials such as posters, infographics, and short videos and reels for outreach.
  • Support the production of podcasts, including recording, editing, and publishing.
  • Explore innovative digital communication strategies to enhance audience engagement.
  • Contribute to any other communication and outreach related activities relevant to the work of SLYCAN Trust and its partners.


Timeframe


The duration of this assignment, under these Terms of Reference, is from the contract signing date (as soon as possible) until June 30th, 2025, with the possibility of extension based on mutual agreement and satisfactory performance in delivering services and completing tasks.


Duty station and places of travel


The assignment is based in Colombo, Sri Lanka with possible travel within Sri Lanka for field work, meetings, and participation in relevant events.


Requirements


  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed a degree in media, communications, journalism, international relations, social sciences, environmental studies, or a related field.
  • Strong writing, editing, and creative skills with the ability to engage diverse audiences effectively.
  • Familiarity with digital communication tools, social media platforms, and website management.
  • Basic knowledge of visual design tools (Canva or similar).
  • Interest in climate change, environment, sustainability, entrepreneurship and social justice issues related to above thematic areas.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast paced environment.
  • Proficiency in English (additional language skills are an asset).
